Massachusetts includes Ecma-376, OpenXML in revised policy

mass.govDoug Mahugh and Andy Updegrove have both blogged about Massachusett's decision to include both Ecma-376 OpenXML and Oasis ODF 1.1 as acceptable document formats.

The revised ETRM policy is now posted on the ITD (Information Technology Division) section of Massachusetts's web site.

I think Massachusetts' decision is a useful waypoint in the debate about open document formats. A consensus is emerging that a single format policy is not the best option, and that multiple formats best serve the public interest. We've already seen this in Denmark and Switzerland, and we see the sentiment strongly reflected in the final version of the report from Gartner on the European Interoperability Framework (EIF) version 2.

Overall I think technology policy makers will see this as a rational development and will be pleased at the path we're all on.

The problem with the Gartner report is Geostrategy. Foreign companies should have absolutely no say on our IT policy. The fact that Microsoft influenced the EU via Gartner clearly shows that it is time to put the kibosh on Microsoft's dirty lobbying in Brussels. European policy makers have to serve European interests, not American companies.
